The Italian JSC project consists in following a group of high school students in the organisation of a science café open to the public.
The main objectives of this approach are:
• To let the students meet the environment of the scientific research, helping them to understand where and how scientific knowledge is produced;
• To develop in students the ability to seek scientific information, with particular attention to the discrimination of the sources;
• To contribute to an image of science as part of general culture, also presenting the scientific attitude as a useful skill in everyday life.
As general aims, JSC project stimulates the participation of scientists in public debate and encourages direct contact between researchers, teachers and students. It also promotes cooperation between schools and research centres.
The final event is held in a public place – the school or a café, a library, etc. One or more students play the role of conductors and moderate the debate between the two researchers and the audience. The event is open to the general public and not only to students. The event is an opportunity to show how science can be a topic of cultural debate and not just a school subject.
From the educational point of view it is of great value the fact that students work in a cooperation context, sharing a collective project in which everyone has responsibilities and there is a group to which to refer and ask for help in case of difficulty.
